We view our clients as individuals and seek to learn their particular concerns and goals. In other words, we listen to our clients and avoid the one size fits all elder law, elder care, special need, and estate plans that some firms offer. For instance, where appropriate, we can prepare living trusts, but we recognize that they often are not the best tool for a particular client. Instead of fitting our clients to cookie cutter Medicaid, elder law, long term care, special need, and estate planning forms, we craft plans and legal instruments tailored to the client’s needs. We help our clients understand their rights, options, and obligations and don’t hesitate to negotiate changes to proposed contracts, whether from long term care facilities, real estate agents, or others. While we litigate when appropriate, we try to achieve our clients’ goals without unnecessary stress and expense. Maybe that’s why our largest referral sources are existing clients and other lawyers.

First, we listen to your concerns regarding elder law, elder care, special needs, Medicaid, estate planning, long term care, and related issues. Then we apply our experience to propose cost effective solutions. We frequently prepare wills and trusts that minimize taxes while transferring assets to desired beneficiaries. By providing for surrogate decision making, powers of attorney, health care proxies, and living wills can implement a client’s wishes and avoid costly and intrusive guardianships. However, when alternatives aren’t available, we help clients obtain guardianship over loved ones who can’t care for themselves. We also review legal documents to ensure clients understand the terms and negotiate changes to onerous provisions whether in form agreements from continuing care retirement communities (CCRC), nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or others. Special needs planning permits family savings and litigation proceeds to be set aside to supplement rather than replace disability aid. We help clients obtain long term care without going broke and suggest and evaluate options. In addition, we deal with all kinds of issues that can arise with Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Social Security Disability, Division of Developmental Disabilities, Pharmaceutical Assistance for Aged and Disabled, senior and disability housing, traumatic brain injury aid, and less common programs to help people in need.

Unlike lawyers who just started practicing special needs, estate planning, Medicaid and long term care planning, or elder law, we’ve been doing this work for decades. Thus, the New Jersey State Bar Association gave Lawrence Friedman its Distinguished Legislative Service Award 2000 for drafting legislation to further special needs trusts in New Jersey, and for many years, Mr. Friedman has chaired both the New Jersey Bar Foundation’s annual Senior Citizens Law Day conference and the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education’s annual Sophisticated Elder Law program. He also is a frequent author of articles, often speaks to lawyers and the public, and has served on governing boards of many special needs and elder groups. Lawrence Friedman passed the rigorous full day exam to become Certified as an Elder Law Attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation, an organization approved by the American Bar Association, and holds a Master of Laws Degree from the prestigious New York University School of Law Graduate Program in Taxation. Finally, Mr. Friedman has been recognized in New Jersey Super Lawyers (published by Thomson Reuters) since 2006 and held Martindale-Hubbel’s highest peer review rating of AV- Preeminent for many years.
